Here is everything you need to know about braces..

The most common treatment for correcting teeth is braces. Braces help by applying a continuous force over a period of time which causes teeth to slowly move direction. Therefore, depending on the patient the results of braces vary. Above all, braces are capable of closing gaps between teeth, straightening crooked or crowded teeth or correcting and over/under bite. Dr. Mir’s job is to correct irregularities in ones mouth. At York Orthodontics we offer 4 types of braces; Metal, Ceramic, Invisalign and Lingual.

Brace Defintion:

“A device that clamps things tightly together or that gives support”

4 TYPES OF BRACES:

1. Metal:

These are the traditional and most common form of braces. Firstly, the brackets are secured directly to the front of each tooth. Secondly, ligatures attach an arch wire in place along the brackets. This arch wire creates a constant force, which guides the teeth to their desired position. These stainless steel braces are the least expensive form of braces but are also the most visible. At York Orthodontics, we offer a variety of coloured ligatures so you can feel more confident about your smile.

2. Ceramic:

Ceramic braces have the same concept as metal braces. Similarily, the brackets, arch wires and ligatures are used to align your teeth. In contrast, ceramic is less visible. As opposed to using stainless steel brackets and wires, Ceramic and white/clear wires are used to create a more invisible look. Ceramic braces are know to be more sensitive, meaning broken/chipped brackets are more common. As a result, Dr.Mir suggests you care for your smile with more caution when wearing ceramic braces. Patients who are interested in the cosmetic appeal of ceramics are likely to pay more for this orthodontic treatment.

3. Invisalign:

Invisalign is a more discreet form of braces, meaning they are practically invisible. The way invisalign works is by using clear, custom fitted moulds to align your teeth. Dr. Mir takes an impression of your teeth to create a series of aligners. After that, you will gradually move on to different aligners once your teeth shift to their desired location. Therefore, the success of Invisalign relies on wearing the aligners for at least 20 hours a day. Invisalign is beneficial to your oral heath because you are able to remove the liners to eat, brush and floss your teeth. Patients who are concerned about their appearance with braces are perfect candidates for this form of orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is perfect for achieving your desired smile with confidence!

4. Lingual:

Lingual braces have the same concept as traditional braces. However, the only difference is that the brackets and bonded and hid behind the teeth as opposed to in front. This is a less common form of orthodontic treatment that requires customized fittings. Most noteworthy, not all orthodontists offer Lingual braces. As a result, Orthodontists must go through specialized training in order to provide this type of treatment. Therefore, this form of treatment costs more than traditional braces. York Orthodontics is proud to offer lingual braces due to Dr. Mir’s expertise.
