Metal braces are one of the most effective orthodontic appliances used to correct various types of misalignments and improve overall oral health. These traditional braces consist of small metal brackets bonded to teeth, connected by a thin wire, and held in place with elastic ties.
By applying gentle pressure, braces will gradually move teeth into their ideal position, creating a more functional and aesthetically pleasing smile. Metal braces remain a popular and effective option for orthodontic patients of all ages.
What are Braces?
Metal braces are one of the most effective orthodontic appliances that help correct many dental misalignments, such as crowding and crooked teeth. While many people get braces when they are kids or teenagers, this doesn’t mean that braces can’t be applied to adults or that they are less effective in correcting dental problems at an older age.
Braces for Children and Kids
In North America, Canada, and the United States, around 4 million kids and teenagers get braces each year.
Let’s discuss the benefits of metal braces for children and kids:
- Improved oral health
- Proper bite alignment
- Speech improvements
- Boost in self-confidence
- Enhanced chewing and digestion
- Prevention of dental trauma
- Long-term financial savings
- Enhanced overall health
- Better nutrition
- Lifelong smile benefits

What's the Best
Time for Getting Braces?
Early orthodontic evaluation, often around the age of 7, is recommended, as some dental issues are best addressed during a child’s growth and development. However, metal braces can be effective at any age, and many adolescents and adults also benefit from metal braces.
Braces for Adults
Metal braces are increasingly used in adults. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in four orthodontic patients is an adult.
Metal braces can effectively correct many dental issues in adults, from crooked teeth and gapped teeth to different types of bite problems, such as overbite, underbite, and others.
How Do Braces Work?
Metal braces work by slowly moving teeth into their proper alignment positions. When teeth are properly aligned, this not only causes gum improvements but also makes them more resistant to the forces of biting and chewing, and easier to clean.
The slow movement over time causes no harm to the roots of the teeth; therefore, your teeth do not become loose and are not at risk.
How to Know If You Need Braces?
A dental exam determines whether a patient is a good candidate for receiving orthodontic treatment.
Reasons for Getting Braces:
- Having an overbite
- Having an underbite
- Having an open bite
- Having a crossbite (not “crossbow”, which is not a dental term)
- Having a speech impediment
- Overcrowding
- Excessive space between teeth
Note:Â If you have gum disease, tooth decay, or multiple cavities, orthodontists do not recommend metal braces.
Braces Types
- Traditional Metal Braces: Made of stainless steel or ceramic, these are the most common type of braces.
- Clear Braces: Made of clear ceramic or plastic, these are less noticeable than traditional metal braces.
- Invisalign: A type of clear aligner that is removable and nearly invisible.
- Lingual Braces: Attached to the back of the teeth, these are invisible from the front.
- Adult Ceramic Braces: Made of ceramic or porcelain, these are less noticeable than traditional metal braces.

Frequently asked questions
Comprehensive orthodontic treatment usually takes a year and a half to two years to complete. However, the duration of treatment for some severe issues, such as a severe overbite, may take up to three years, depending on the patient's dental issues.
The cost of braces varies depending on factors such as the severity of the patient's dental issues, location, and the orthodontist's experience; however, the average cost of traditional braces ranges from $3,000 to $8,500.
Many dental insurances cover part of the cost of braces; however, you need to check with your insurance provider to determine what your coverage entails. Please note that at York Orthodontics, we offer flexible payment plans, such as weekly or monthly installments, to make the braces journey accessible to everyone.
The cost of adult braces with insurance highly depends on your insurance provider and dental plan. You can ask your orthodontist to submit a pre-treatment estimate to help you get a better idea of your expenses.
Avoid eating chewy, textured foods, such as nuts, caramels, licorice, or gum, as they can get stuck in your braces and damage them. Additionally, it's best to avoid eating hard foods, such as raw fruits and vegetables, unless you cut them into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
Brushing your teeth with braces is similar to brushing teeth without braces. Use a soft-bristled or electronic toothbrush. If you have clear aligners, first remove them and then brush your teeth.
Getting metal braces doesn't hurt; however, minor discomfort is common. In the first few days after getting braces, some patients may experience pain, often describing it as a sore or aching jaw. Mild over-the-counter painkillers and home remedies like saltwater rinses can be effective in soothing discomfort.
