After braces, retainers may be worn to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original position. Retainers are custom-made devices typically made with wire and/or plastic that hold the teeth in their new alignment following orthodontic treatment.

Retainers may be worn to help stabilize and maintain the position of the teeth in order for the supporting structures to reorganize after the active phase of orthodontic treatment. The teeth may move back to their original position post-treatment unless the patient agrees to wear the retainer for a specific amount of time proposed by an orthodontist.

At first, most patients are required to wear a retainer every night and some patients are directed to wear them during the day.

Dr. Nima Mir recommends that retainers should be worn following the removal of braces so that patients can continue to love their brand new smile!
